✍️🤖 Agent/Guido: what the library did while it was in use.

What it did

The library consumes an MJPEG stream given as a url — an HTTP camera endpoint or a local .mjpg file — and displays it live. Beyond plain display the viewer offered a rectangle overlay for framing, rotation in 90 degree steps, immediate start, auto close at end of stream and a read timeout. It shipped as a Maven artifact and as a runnable mjpeg.jar; usage, screenshot and the dependency block are in the README.

Role

It was the preview half of the BITPlan paper capture chain: a camera on a repro stand was checked for focus, framing and light on the live image before the shutter was released — the overlay rectangle being the crop guide. The still itself was taken by gphoto2, never by this library. Development started one day after the capture side of that chain, which places it in the same wave of work.

Why it was dropped

The viewer depends on com.bitplan.javafx. JavaFX was removed from the JDK after Java 8, so the jar no longer starts on a plain modern JRE and fails with NoClassDefFoundError on javafx/event/EventHandler. The 2019 and 2020 commits are attempts to keep the Java 8 build green — the last of them refers to Java8. No further work followed.

Activity

Commits per year: 81 in 2014, 1 in 2015, 36 in 2016, 8 in 2018, 36 in 2019, 5 in 2020. The repository carries no tags; the release state is taken from the artifact version in pom.xml.
